The Roving Vet
About Dr. Shuli
The Homeopathic Veterinarian: Dr. Shulamit Krakauer graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in 1997. She developed an interest in alternative medicine during that time and a particular interest in homeopathy. After practicing conventional medicine, including a large and small animal rural practice and a busy emergency clinic, she decided to pursue this passion. Shulamit completed the International Veterinary Acupuncture course and certification program in 1999 and the Animal Natural Health Center Homeopathy program with Dr. David Evans and Dr. Richard Pitcairn in 2001. She completed the Vancouver Academy of Homeopathy 4 year program in 2004. Dr. Shulamit continues her studies by participating in advanced seminars with internationally renowned homeopaths in order to expand her knowledge of homeopathic remedies and their use in people and animals. Dr. Krakauer took a craniosacral course in 2008 and is also enjoying adding this gentle modality to acupuncture treatments. Shulamit is fortunate to have worked with various holistic and conventional veterinarians both in Vancouver and on Vancouver Island, which has given her a wide range of clinical experience and exposure to various treatment options. Outside of work and study, Shulamit enjoys being in the great outdoors with her dog Bug, who also likes to sing…

Information for New Clients
Fees
Explanation of Charges The purpose of this explanation is to make clear the fee schedule and prevent any misunderstandings as we work together to care for your pet. Treating holistically is very different from conventional veterinary care in that it is more time intensive. Rather than emphasizing charges for medicines, vaccination and surgery – like most veterinary services – there will be a charge for time spent on the case. Sometimes this time is spent after the visit or phone consultation by researching and analyzing the case. Initial homeopathic intake: The initial intake is usually 1-1.5 hours and we will go over in detail the history, current complaint and individual symptoms of your pet. We may also discuss vaccination recommendations and diet changes. The initial intake is $220.00, which includes the homeopathic analysis and any research that may need to be done following the appointment. Acute or first aid problems may be treated in a 45 minute appointment which is $115. Follow-ups: Follow-ups are normally 30-45 minutes and are scheduled at 6-8 week intervals initially until we feel progress is being made and a good level of health has been achieved. Housecall follow-ups are $90. Acupuncture follow-ups are $110. Follow-up…

Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese healing system that can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions. This healing system works with the energy of the body, referred to as chi. Imbalances in chi in the body can manifest as organ dysfunction and can often be detected before diagnostic tests show any changes. The energy travels through the body along meridians which can then be accessed with pressure or with the use of needles. Acupuncture is most commonly used to treat musculoskeletal conditions although it can be used to treat many other problems. Sometimes it is used in conjunction with Chinese herbs. The limiting factor for an acupuncture treatment may be the animal but many animals love the endorphin release that they get when the needles go in. Acupressure can also be a useful diagnostic and treatment tool. Sensitive points along the back can detect early organ imbalance and animal caretakers can be shown points to massage on a daily basis to assist the body in strengthening or rebalancing an organ. Homeopathy
Homeopathy is a holistic and effective system of healing that assists the natural tendency of the body to heal itself. In homeopathy tiny doses of natural substances are used to stimulate the body’s own healing powers. Homeopathic principles have been used in medicine since ancient times but were rediscovered by the German physician Dr. Samuel Hahnemann in the late 1700’s. Homeopathy was one of the most used healing systems in North America during the second half of the last century. In the early 1900’s, 15-20% of all doctors in North America were homeopaths. Due to powerful social and political forces, the homeopathic movement was overshadowed by the growing pharmaceutical industry. Today, we see an increase in the usage of homeopathic medicine as is provides a safe alternative to conventional medicine and has no harmful side effects. Homeopathy works on a level of molecular energy sometimes referred to as the “vital force”, chi or prana. Disease can be seen as an imbalance in the energy of our body and the homeopathic remedy acts as a stimulant to this energy which can then overcome disease and re-establish balance in the system. The basic tenet is to accept that a sick individual is…

This may include diagnostic tests such as bloodwork, x-rays or referral to a specialist for an ultrasound. The Roving Vet offers access to a full service surgical suite as well as full dental care. The caring staff will make sure that animals recover from anaesthesia in comfort and are giving homeopathic remedies to assist in recovery and control postoperative pain. Fiona is a 14 year old chihuahua who had a stroke and lost the use of her hind limbs. Although Fiona’s biggest pleasures in life are to cuddle under a blanket and get attention from her many admirers, it was tragic for her caretaker to watch her slip and slide and fall as she tried to get across the floor. After less than 2 weeks of homeopathic treatment, Fiona was greatly improved and started to do her “wheelies”. She is now active and…

Diet Recommendations
Wouldn’t it be strange if your doctor told you to eat fortified Kraft dinner every meal, every day, from birth to old age? How many of us question the same advice for our animal companions. Although the pet food companies tell us that this is the only way to feed a balanced diet to our animal friends, isn’t it strange that there are no whole, fresh, unprocessed foods in this diet? Isn’t it questionable that despite their claims of crunchy food keeping teeth clean that veterinary dentistry is probably the fastest growing specialty? Despite our domestication of the canine and feline and the fact that a Chihuahua may not look much like a wolf, the truth is that we haven’t changed their gastrointestinal systems. Cats and dogs are carnivores, designed to eat meat, bones and the intestinal contents of their prey. Bug chows down on a raw chicken Ricky plots the best approach to lunch. Dogs are scavengers so can survive on a greater variety of foods than cats can. Yet we feed them a diet of dried up processed grains and meat, most of which is waste products, or that deemed unfit for human consumption. In fact, many health…
